-Services for our Authors-

Authors sometimes need various services besides our own to make their books a success. If Awe-Struck likes your work and we accept it for publication, you might want to come back to this spot to see what services are available. Whether or not you use these services is not a requirement for us to publish you. It's strictly your choice. Our services are free. But if you feel you need additional services, the links below are an excellent place to start.

COVER DESIGN SPECS:

resolution:
300 dpi
size:
height, 7.5 inches, width, 5 inches.
file format:
jpeg saved at the very highest quality

IMPORTANT! If you can post the cover so I can download it onto my hard drive, I prefer a tif file since that will give me the highest quality. If this isn't an option for you, send me a jpeg by email attachment. Just make sure it's not larger than 3 or 4 Megs or else it could jam up my mailbox.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE EBOOK COVER: Keep in mind that you are not designing a cover that will be used at considerable size on a paperback or hard cover book. The largest cover on our site will be 150 pixels wide (at 72 dpi resolution). To you, the designer, this means several things--

1> Don't include details so small they will be lost when viewed at the 150 pixels wide size. Keep the design simple. The 150 size will be used on the home page when a title is first released, and it will be used on the author's description page. The size used on the genre pages is only 100 pixels wide. In fact, the size used for Mobipocket's site, (Awe-Struck E-Books books are also sold from this site), are only 125 pixels tall! Most covers, regardless of how well they're designed, lose significant detail at this size, but it serves to show that highly detailed ebook covers are quite simply not an option. Ebook covers are displayed on the Net at small sizes and you have to design a cover with this in mind.

2> Avoid decorative text if it becomes unreadable when reduced to the 150 pixel wide size. Use a clear font, and separate the letters so reduction doesn't weld them together into an unreadable lump.

3> Make sure the author's name is as readable as the title. It needn't be as large as the title, but it should be readable, nevertheless. Using a font without serifs, (like Arial or Helvetica), gives greater readablility at reduced sizes.

4> Make sure the cover has good contrast. Low contrast can hide details.

5> Don't use a white background. Make sure the background holds the elements together, but don't use white. More than once I've had to ask artists to change a background. You'll want to avoid this dilemma.

6> Use some type of style treatment on the title and author name. Flat lettering looks unprofessional.

7> TO THE NON PROFESSIONALS WHO WANT TO MAKE THEIR OWN COVER: Some authors try making their own covers. If this is the case with you, you'd better be prepared to give me something that's at a professional level. If I find a cover to be "lacking", I'll tell you so. I won't accept covers that look amateur. A good cover is your best tool for selling your book. Without it, we're all wasting our time.

Please do not send files attached to an email that's more than 2 or 3 Megs. If the file is larger than this, post it on a download page for me. A site frequently used by our authors is filegenie.com, although there are other services that do the same thing. If you have server space somewhere, post it there. All we'll need is the URL. Or, in filegenie's case, the logon and password.

However you get the covers to us, the contact email is--

dick_awestruck@fastmail.fm

If you send covers attached, PLEASE zip them, or, (if you use a Mac), Stuff them with a utility like Stuffit. Uncompressed files spread out in my browser and sometimes they're monstrous to corral.

Please send attached files zipped or, (if you use a Mac), Stuffed. If the file is greater than 1.3 Megs, don't send it attached. Instead-

Upload to a server, make a page with a download link, and tell me what the URL is

or

Upload it to a download service like FileGenie (www.filegenie.com) and give me the username and password so I can download it

or

Burn it to a CD and send it to-
